Mave-Chan is the tanned character. She ends up being more of a side character |
Having recently gone mad with "RighStuff fever", I found myself looking around the site, trying to find some stuff that looked even remotely interesting to watch. Of course, I looked in the Bargain Bin daily, even after I stopped ordering, and would just look at all the great deals they put on their. It is then that I fell on a little one episode OVA name "(Fighting Fairy Girl)Rescue Me: Mave-Chan". The anime, which I forgot to look into before buying, was at the low price of 3$, so I added it blindly to my cart without thinking.....and I actually don't regret it as much as I probably should.
"Rescue me: Mave-Chan" is about Rei, a young man who has been given the opportunity to make a life changing trip, one that will change his life forever and make him into a real man. A soul changing experience that will help him reach a new point in his life: a free ticket to a huge anime convention! However, once he arrives at said convention, he gets lost on his way to the toilet and somehow enters the world of IMAGINATION! Within the world, he meets a group of girls who where all created by the minds of various Otaku who are currently at the convention. They are facing elimination, since the show they are based on isn't popular and people are starting to forget about them. Rei now needs to return home before this world is completely destroyed, as well as cut off from reality. Will he be able to return home? Will the girls die? Will they end up in some twisted fan fiction that involve many tools that they would rather never know the existence of? Well, if I told you that, then I'd be giving out spoilers now, wouldn't I.
As far as the plot goes, this is one of the stupidest ones that I have had the chance to come across. It's completely stupid from start to finish and the fact that it actually takes itself seriously makes it somehow charming and makes for a decent watch if you like hilariously bad anime. The whole show revolves around the concept of fan fiction, bringing the ideas of everyone's favorite anime to life(or in this case, It seems it would be based on "Yukikaze", an OVA I know noting about). Although I do find the idea kind of funny and somewhat interesting, the fact to the matter is the execution was done horribly. The show also seems to drag on at times, making it feel like it's ten times longer than it is, which is bad, considering it's only 20 minutes long. You start feeling as tough you've just watched 7 episodes of it once you reached the midway point, which is bad, considering that's only about 10 minutes.
As far as the characters are concerned, I found the fact they made each of them a different trope a nice touch, even if done poorly. The main female characters are basically a big breasted "Miyuki" like character, a tomboyish little tanned fighter and a twin-tail tsundere with purple hair. The reason I find this to be a nice touch is because they are fictional characters created by the imagination of many Otaku, thus making them prone to these tropes(as well as other things they hint at). I want to believe that if the anime was good, they would have played with various tropes. I find that might have been interesting and fun to see.... then again, I shouldn't expect much from an anime that has flying airplane girls. As far as the villain, Forgetta-san(I'm not making this up), is concerned, he is quite funny and I found him very entertaining. He made the show worth the while and almost made me want to add him to my list of favorite characters.
The English dub is sub par, to a point where it's almost as bad as Elfen Lied. However, some characters manage to carry most of it and balance the the dub out so that it's not complete and utter trash, even though it's not by much. The music is not really anything special and is just kind of there.
All in all, "Rescue Me: Mave-Chan" is just bad. The plot doesn't make much sense and the characters are flatter than a stuck up tsundere. The only redeeming values the show has are Forgetta-San and the fact that it's so laughably bad.
Final Verdict: 2/10
Pros:
+Short(22 minutes long)
+Funny for the wrong reasons
+Somewhat interesting idea
+Forgetta-San is hilarious
Cons:
-Stupid on every level
-Poor execution
-Drags at times, making it feel way longer than it actually is
-Tries to make you feel guilty about forgetting shows
